House Mathosi
Overview
The opportunity to design on this site was both exciting and humbling. Positioned on a ridge, the existing house offered sweeping views over a sea of blooming jacaranda trees, stretching all the way to the western skyline of Johannesburg. The setting was nothing short of breathtaking—a heritage home nestled into a rocky ridge, where nature’s drama met the vibrant energy of the city below.

Our narrative emerged naturally: the ridge would act as the anchor of the design. By framing the rock face with a large window, we created a striking backdrop visible from the main living areas, grounding the interior in its natural surroundings. On the opposite side, the city’s skyline became the hero, with new design elements crafted to embrace the vista fully.

The interiors underwent significant transformation. The kitchen and living spaces were reimagined as open-plan, creating a flow that feels modern yet timeless. Over the dining area, a proposed double-volume space introduces a sense of grandeur, while resolving circulation issues on the upper level with elegance and purpose.

As the property is classified as a heritage building, our work involved collaboration with the Provincial Heritage Committee. Every addition had to honour the home’s historical significance while meeting the owners’ vision for a modern retreat. This balance was achieved through careful detailing and thoughtful design. A modern master bedroom wing was added, featuring a private art studio and gym on the lower level, blending seamlessly with the existing structure while standing confidently as a new chapter in the home’s story.

Design New Stories
This project was a celebration of contrasts—the rugged permanence of the ridge, the delicate beauty of jacarandas, and the dynamic energy of Johannesburg’s skyline. It was about preserving the past while looking to the future, creating a space where history, nature, and contemporary living coexist in perfect harmony.
